review – phat burrito, southend (latin american)

i had quite an interesting experience on my first visit to phat burrito. one soggy monday night, we decided to grab takeout from someplace nearby. since it was getting very close to 9pm, we knew our decision needed to be made swiftly. i’d heard from several people about how great phat burrito’s food was, so i decided to place an order around 8:30pm that night.

the dude who answered the phone was definitely a character. i ordered a chicken quesadilla, a steak burrito, a steak tortilla salad, and some extra guac. he asked multiple times if i would make it there by 9, OR ELSE. amused, i assured him we would be there right away.

oh my god, i’m a guest blogger! i want to thank the academy for this delicious opportunity, god for my enviable set of taste buds (they get a lot of action)…um, and my friend renee for her undying support and patient leniency in HER kitchen. i’m sorry, renee, for what i’m sure is still a stain of hardened sugar on your beautiful stove…

arroz con habichuelas (latin american beans and rice)

i didn’t put much thought into this choice being the first one on the blog. in truth, i’m not that purposeful. it’s a timing thing . . . and a hunger thing, ha!

it just so happens that tonight, i was cooking for a friend of mine who is “veganish”. the best way to describe his diet is to say this — if a life wasn’t taken to provide it, it’s okay to eat. i’m not passionate one way or the other when it comes to eating meat/not eating meat. if it tastes good, i’m there.

review – pio pio, dilworth (latin american)

do you ever go to a really tiny restaurant not many people know about and leave in fear? you glance uneasily in the direction of its worrisome location and wonder when the day will come that you’ll be craving that food only to find that the economy has, yet again, robbed you of satisfaction.
